Pre-Conference Day, March 9th, 2020

The Tri-State Pre-Conference Day falls on Monday, March 9th and is intended to have workshops only. This day is designed to give you specialized opportunities to continue your education outside of general conference hours. 

The Tri-State CAMP conference starts on Tuesday, March 10, 2020.

New Director's Orientation

This 8-hour interactive ACA National course provides an overview of key aspects of the camp director’s job and is intended for seasoned or new camp directors, assistant directors, program directors, or people who have been in other administrative positions and are considering directing camp in the near future. The course will cover many areas with special focus offered on leadership, risk management, camper behavior, staff training, and staff supervision. Upon completion of this one-day course, the ACA National office will mail you a certificate of completion, suitable for framing. Join Ben Esposito and several experienced camp directors for this informative course. Cost includes a light breakfast and lunch and full course curriculum.

Youth Mental Health First Aid Course

SECOND COURSE ADDED! Youth Mental Health First Aid USA is an 8 hour public education program which introduces participants to the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents, builds understanding of the importance of early intervention, and teaches individuals how to help an adolescent in crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge. Mental Health First Aid uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis; select interventions and provide initial help; and connect young people to professional, peer, social, and self-help care.

Pride in Camping Pre-Conference Workshop

Calling all 2SLGBTQ+ Camp Community Members! 

Members of the 2SLGBTQ+ camp community are often contacted by folks who are looking for information on how to make their camps and programs more inclusive to our community members. That individual work that community members have done has been invaluable to the camp community at large and we want to SCALE-UP by harnessing the collective knowledge and wisdom of 2SLGTBQ+ camp professionals. 

Participants in this session will work with other dedicated 2SLGBTQ+ camp professionals to create a set of best practice guidelines that camps can use to make their communities and programs more inclusive for 2SLGBTQ+ campers, families, and staff. To ensure that the work done by this group will have the maximum impact, these best practice guidelines will be made available, free of charge, on the Pride Camping Association website. 

Participants in this session will be listed as contributors on the best practice guidelines (with the ability to opt-out) and receive limited-edition Pride Camping Association swag to acknowledge their contribution to the 2SLGBTQ+ camp community.

Best. Supervisor. Ever.

Supervising leaders who manage others can be a tricky endeavor. You don’t want to micromanage, but you have your ideas of how things should be done. You seek to empower, but you want to retain a bit of control. You want them to grow, but need to ensure accountability. You need (and want!) them to be successful!

This day-long session will provide participants with the tools to be an efficient, empathetic, and engaging supervisor. We will learn and apply intuitive approaches that promote supervisory relationships that foster creativity and allow supervisees to flourish. Topics include: approaches to coaching; facilitating an environment for success; structures for effective problem solving; accountability; and corrective actions.

Our interactive agenda is structured using an “Understand – Practice – Apply” approach with large group discussions, small group exercises, and partner feedback sessions. Throughout the day, participants will create a detailed plan to address a burning (or simmering) issue that they need to confront in the near future.

In addition to the day-long session, small group follow-up video conference sessions will be scheduled to reinforce the learning and share successes!

This session will be helpful if you are a great supervisor who is ready to up your game, a brand-new supervisor who will benefit from a new toolkit, or a supervisor who is ready to take it to the next level.

Join summer camp and auxiliary staff from independent schools across the country for an evening of learning and networking at Cuba Libre at the Tropicana. Happy hour will begin at 4:30 pm followed by a seated dinner. This is a great opportunity to meet other independent school professionals before the Tri-State CAMP Conference begins!

ACA Accreditation Process Workshops

Accreditation Process Workshop
Four-hour in-person workshop

Audience: This workshop is designed for camp representatives who are preparing for accreditation visits in 2019 and beyond. The course is appropriate for those who are new to the accreditation process AND those who have been part of an accreditation visit or completed standards training in the past. Every camp being visited must have at least one person who completes the workshop on behalf of the camp; that person must actively assist in the preparation for the accreditation visit, be on-site a significant amount of time during the camp season, and participate fully in the on-site accreditation visit. 

Workshop Objectives: Participants leave feeling excited, engaged, and ready to prepare for an accreditation visit. They know where to find and how to use information, resources, and technology provided by ACA. They can navigate the Accreditation Process Guide, 2019 Edition to understand compliance and applicability of standards, including all revisions to the standards and the accreditation process, and they can articulate the steps in the visit timeline and the responsibilities of the camp and the visitors.

Pool Director Training Course

As required by the New Jersey Public Recreational Bathing Code (NJAC 8:26)

This one-day classroom instruction class is an APPROVED provider program per the New Jersey Department of Health to meet the requirement for pools larger than 2,000 square feet to have the designated adult supervisor possessing the Pool Director Training certification.

Class runs 9:00 am – 6:00 pm. Topics covered include general pool director knowledge, filtration and pool equipment, water chemistry and water testing, sanitizers, water problems and pool troubleshooting, New Jersey Public Recreational Bathing Code (PRB NJAC 8:26) Interpretation; supervision and staff training, and injury and drowning prevention. After the classroom instruction, there is a one (1) hour exam. The exam has 25 questions. You need a 72 percent to pass. Once you pass, you will receive a certification in 3-4 weeks. It is valid for three years.

The cost of the class is $200.00*. (If you register less than two weeks before the start there is a $25 late fee, bringing the fee to $225.00.)

Join us for a brief introduction to Atlantic City and the Tri-State CAMP Conference, where you will discover the “must-attend” events that take place Tuesday through Thursday. This multifaceted program will help you determine what goals are most important to you and your camp profession, and then match up the key educational sessions and networking events you can’t miss. You’ll have an opportunity to meet fellow new attendees that you can look forward to seeing around the conference. Feel free to stop by one of the two sessions to meet ACA staff and learn all of the need-to-know information. You will even receive a goody bag for attending!
